Nearly 100 people have been arrested so far at this year's Notting Hill Carnival as police are given extra stop-and-search powers to reduce a recent surge in violence across London.

Among the 97 people arrested there were 12 suspected of assaulting a police officer after 11 were injured on duty on Sunday.

Nine were detained on suspicion of having an offensive weapon and 41 for drug offences.

There were also three suspected s-xual offences, one robbery and one case of suspected criminal damage.

Police patrolling the event in west London have been given extra powers to stop and search carnival-goers after a surge in 'incidents of violence' in the capital in recent weeks.
