Police sacks officer who killed Jelili Bakare for questioning search

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed Inspector Jonathan Kampani (AP No 278055) attached to Mounted Troop of the Force.

Kampani fired and killed Jelili Bakare at Quinox Lounge, Sangotedo area of Lagos, on March 18, 2021.

He had wanted to search the 45-year-old businessman who was relaxing at the spot.

Kampani got furious after Bakare demanded to know why he wanted to search him and shot him.

Lagos Police spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement said the dismissal had been conveyed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State CID, Panti.

Kampan will be prosecuted as advised by the Department of Public Prosecution, Lagos.

The Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, ordered the arrest and orderly room trial of the inspector after the incident.

Odumosu also led a team of senior officers on a condolence visit to the family of the deceased at Chief Bakare’s House, Ajiranland, Eti-Osa LGA.

He assured the public that the police and the judiciary will ensure justice in the matter.
